A jazz concert with cheese and sherry tasting, an edible hat workshop and a festival of literature and gastronomy are just a few of the things planned for Gastrofestival Madrid. From 31 January until 15 February, this great gastronomic event celebrates its sixth edition, with an activity-packed programme presented today by Mayor Ana Botella, and in which culinary art is combined with other disciplines including painting, fashion, film and literature. As the Mayor emphasised, "this is a hugely high-profile event showcasing the quality and variety of Madrid's gastronomy scene and putting our city in the spotlight as a world-class centre of culinary art".

The tourism sector is crucial to Madrid's economy. It represents 7.1% of GDP and 150,950 jobs. 90,570 (60%) of these jobs are directly created. Last year over eight million tourists chose Madrid as their destination, setting a new record. In order to consolidate and improve these figures, two tools have been launched in the form of a public-private collaborative endeavour to drive growth: Asociación Turismo Madrid, which is a new management model for Madrid as a tourist destination, and a 5-Year Strategic Plan. The local City Council, the regional government and companies in the tourism sector have joined efforts to achieve some very specific goals: increasing the flow of tourists by 30% and improving hotel occupancy rates, increasing tourist spending by 50% and cutting seasonality by 20%.

Present at the occasion were José Tono Martínez, the centre’s director; Felipe Garín Llombart, the exhibition curator;  Enrique Gutiérrez de Calderón, the project manager; and Francisco Bocanegra, the architect responsible for the show’s design and layout.

Ana Botella presents the latest version of the capital’s official tourism website with a brand new image and content

esMADRID.com has a new look

Today, the Mayor of Madrid, Ana Botella, presented the revamped version of esMADRID.com (www.esmadrid.com), the best online introduction to Madrid. The official tourism website for the Spanish capital “is a permanent and up-to-date window open to the world, enhancing the promotion, attention and services Madrid offers its visitors so that the positive performance in the numbers of tourists to Madrid this year may not only continue, but also increase,” stated Botella. At the event she was accompanied by Pedro Corral, councillor for the Arts, Sports and Tourism Department, and by Alberto Merchante, the managing director of the local authority-owned company Madrid Destino.

Madrid will be the epicentre of world junior tennis over the next three years. The city is set to host the final rounds of the Junior Davis Cup and the Junior Fed Cup by BNP Paribas -a mixed tournament- in 2015, 2016 and 2017.
